ViewSonic VPAD7 Review by Carol (Fort Collins)

I wanted a smaller tablet which could double as a phone for business. I do much more email than calling. Smartphones are too small, and that sexy Ipad tablet is too big doesn't have a phone. The Viewpad 7 fit the bill and the price is reasonable. After a month of use, here are my comments.

* Phone. Was able to walk into T-Mobile, get a sim card and the $30 pre-paid month-to-month phone plan. No hassle. If you're a big talker, you probably want a "real" phone, but this works just fine for short use.

* Android OS. No, not as cool as the Apple os. I've had to re-set a couple of times. But, good enough. The Android market place has quite a few free apps -- some work, some don't.

* Email. Just what I wanted. No hassle to set up, and much easier to read & respond to email than on a smart phone.

* Camera. My primary use is reading QR codes. Works fine for this. Not a great camera, but if you need a Pendex, buy that instead.

* Word, PowerPoint & PDFs. Comes with Docs to Go software which does the basics. I probably wouldn't read a book on it, but fine for business documents.

* Display. Looks clear & crisp to me. Some glare if you're not right in front of it, but not a big deal.

Negatives (I would rate these as minor):
* Can't seem to get the picture gallary software to work. Perhaps user error.
* The little speaker cover on the left-hand side pops open when I turn off the unit. It doesn't come off, but makes me wonder about long-term durability.
* The cover/stand doesn't work when the charging cord is plugged in.

Summary: Good little unit

still getting into using the tablet but it does what is described in the information. Could be a bit faster but it is a tablet, not a notebook. Limited on board memory makes the user monitor his downloads. Would be nice if all the downloads could go to the sd card. Skype can be very useful if you want to use it as a phone internationally.


ViewSonic VPAD7 Review by Hoagie (California)

The VPAD 7 meets most all my needs. It is a very convenient size and offers phone, a tethering modem, and internet access via phone provider and wifi. It also works well as a ebook reader. These are all very important features as I am cruising on a sailboat the VPAD 7 provides most all my normal communication needs in a package that can used aboard and also easily carried ashore. The major Cons are that there is very limited on-board memory and storage, and the battery life is limited. Because many of the necessary Apps must reside on phone memory, out-of-memory errors have been common making browsing difficult and texting unavailable. I removed the factory installed Market program, and loaded all Apps that I could on the SD card. This seems to have freed enough memory that these issues now "appear" to be resolved.
